Bridge damaged in NJ derailment to be fixed soon

PAULSBORO, N.J. (AP) - December 15, 2012

Officials say the bridge may be back in service within the next two days.

A ruptured tanker car released vinyl chloride when seven cars of an 84-car train derailed on or near a swivel-style bridge over Mantua Creek on Nov. 30.

The gas, used to make PVC plastic, led to the evacuation of more than 329 families and businesses. No one was seriously sickened, though dozens were checked out at a hospital.

Coast Guard Capt. Kathy Moore tells the newspaper they were working Saturday to remove the one remaining rail car as safely and quickly as possible.
