Bernard Scott, an Overbrook High School student, was discovered by a good Samaritan shortly after the shooting. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the arm and chest.
That passerby drove Scott to Lankenau Hospital where the teen later died.
The shooting happened shortly before 3:45 p.m. Thursday near the football practice field at the intersection of 59th Street and Lancaster Avenue.
The baseball team was out practicing when gunshots erupted. Police say the group involved was playing football when there was a fight and the baseball players had to duck for cover. "We have a group of teenagers in the park. At some point a fight breaks out, a fistfight. At some point two guns are introduced and the males begin shooting back-and-forth at each other," said Lt. John Walker of the Philadelphia Police.
Another victim, a 16-year-old, was found outside a nearby pizza shop with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.
Another person with a gunshot wound was found by police who were stopping cars looking for witnesses. Officers noticed the 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to the back.
Witnesses told police that the 19-year-old was one of the shooters. That man was taken to the hospital and is now in police custody.
A 20-year-old man is also in police custody. He was also nabbed while police were stopping cars.
Students in after-school programs at Overbrook High were kept inside as the school went on lockdown for about 90 minutes after the shooting.
