Man killed in South Philadelphia fire

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - April 22, 2013

Crews were dispatched at 8:31 a.m. to a home near South 5th Street and Watkins Street.

Firefighters reported light smoke showing from the 2-story home when they arrived.

The fire was placed under control at 8:53 a.m.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene as the result of the fire.

Investigators say the blaze started in the kitchen. They believe the victim tried to put the flames out himself.

Smoke detectors in the home were working, but Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says it appears the victim did not heed the warning.

"You have to listen to those smoke alarms. It's one thing to listen to our message. You get them in, make sure you have your smoke alarms. Make sure that they're properly mounted. But that home escape plan is very important," explained Ayers.

Firefighters have not yet determined how the victim died.
