Woman, 82, thwarts carjacking outside Newark, Del. Acme

Delaware State Police are investigating the attempted carjacking of an 82-year-old woman outside a Newark grocery store.

The incident happened at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Acme grocery store, located at 146 Fox Hunt Drive in the Fox Run Shopping Center.

According to police, the victim had loaded groceries into the back seat of her car. She then pushed her cart to the cart collection area and returned to the car, getting into the driver's seat. That's when she was confronted by a suspect, who had gotten into the back seat.

The man placed his hands on her shoulders and told her to drive him to an undisclosed destination. However, the woman quickly got out of the car and began screaming for help.

The suspect then got out the car and fled the scene on foot.

The suspect is described as a black male, 20-25 years of age, 6'0" to 6'04" tall, with an average build, wearing a blue shirt and gray pants.
