Dover amends sex offender registry ordinance

DOVER, Del. (AP) - May 29, 2013

The council voted 6-2 on Tuesday to allow residents on the registry who already live within 500 feet of a day care center to stay in their homes.

The change is aimed at resolving a federal lawsuit brought earlier this year. The American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware sued on behalf of Michael Justice, an offender who would have been forced to move.

Council President Dave Bonar says the change allows Justice and another offender to stay in their homes. He says the city will work to have the lawsuit amicably dismissed and ask state legislators to address the issue so municipalities won't have to.
