Del. bill focuses on charter schools, oversight

DOVER, Del. - June 2, 2013

The News Journal reports House Bill 165 is expected to be debated in committee on Wednesday. It would create a "Charter School Performance Fund" for the Department of Education to distribute funds to charters with a proven track record.

It would allow charter schools access to bond financing like other nonprofits to fund building projects.

Gov. Jack Markell supports the bill. He says it's an important step to improving the charter school system.

But some critics say it would take resources away from traditional public schools.

Supporters say it would allow successful charter schools to grow while holding them more accountable.
