The incident happened around 1:00 p.m. Friday.
Firefighters spread foam and water into the underground tank to contain the scene.
The contractor suffered burns and was taken to an Cooper University Hospital for treatment.
Still no word what ignited the explosion.
Route 73 was briefly closed shortly after the incident but has since reopened.
