The water began gushing just after midnight on the southbound lanes of the 1700 block of South Columbus Boulevard.
Officials say, the break caused some of the road to buckle and three lanes and the walkway were affected.
Crews were able to stop the water flow and one lane was allowed to get by.
Motorists should expect delays throughout the morning as crews make repairs.
