NJ police officer accused of evidence tampering

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - July 3, 2013

Lawnside Police Lt. Lloyd Lewis was charged Tuesday with four counts of official misconduct and three of tampering with evidence and public records.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Garrigan, did not immediately return a call Wednesday morning.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office says the 23-year officer helped a relative of a friend wanted in a Salem County homicide case to surrender to police in August 2008.

Authorities say Lewis told the man, Lee Williams Jr., of his right to remain silent and then took and recorded a confession statement. But they say he made no report about the statements and did not save the audio or video recordings.
