Some left out of Jersey shore beach protection

SURF CITY, N.J. (AP) - July 9, 2013

The three northernmost streets in Surf City on Long Beach Island aren't part of a beach renourishment project wrapping up this week.

Residents of 23nd through 25th streets say they can't believe the work will stop just short of their homes, some of which were damaged in the storm.

The town and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say the exclusion is due to holdouts who wouldn't give permission for work to be done behind their houses for the original 2007 project. It will take extra funding by Congress to include them in a future project.
