It happened around 4:30 Saturday afternoon on the 500 block of West Eleanor Street.
Officials say a crew was working on a house when a piece of the roof fell, hitting a gas main.
PGW crews shut down the gas and a number of residents had to be evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
The residents were allowed to return in an hour.
