Birders go crazy over rare species

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - July 23, 2013

But that's changing now with the spotting of a species called the Rufous-necked wood-rail.

The bird had never been spotted in the U.S. before - that is before the last couple of weeks, when one was spotted at a national wildlife refuge in New Mexico.

That has spawned a spike in visitors to the area.

Phones at the Bosque del Apache refuge have been ringing nonstop since the bird was sighted - with people coming from all parts of the country to check out the elusive wood-rail.
