But that's changing now with the spotting of a species called the Rufous-necked wood-rail.
The bird had never been spotted in the U.S. before - that is before the last couple of weeks, when one was spotted at a national wildlife refuge in New Mexico.
That has spawned a spike in visitors to the area.
Phones at the Bosque del Apache refuge have been ringing nonstop since the bird was sighted - with people coming from all parts of the country to check out the elusive wood-rail.
