The (Bloomsburg) Press Enterprise reports the animals died when the blaze gutted the twin home in Shickshinny early Wednesday morning. No people were hurt.

Derek Smith, his wife Kim and their 2-year-old son Tristyn were upstairs when the fire broke out. Kim Smith's mother, who owned 10 of the dogs and owns the home, was not there at the time.

Shickshinny Fire Chief Kevin Morris says the fire may have started in the kitchen, but the cause wasn't immediately known.

Fire marshals are still investigating.
