GEORGETOWN, Del. - August 2, 2013

It was 10:11 p.m. when a State Trooper responded to the 22000 block of Deep Branch Road as part of an investigation into a hit-an-run incident that occurred in Millsboro earlier that day.

According to State Police, the Trooper was inside the residence questioning 53-year-old Michael W. Rogers about the hit-and-run incident when the highly intoxicated Rogers became uncooperative. Rogers then allegedly became violent and a physical struggle ensued between the two.

After an unsuccessful attempt to subdue Rogers with a Taser, the Trooper pulled out his weapon and opened fire, striking Rogers multiple times in the upper body and lower extremities.

Rogers was transported to Beebe Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. He is charged with Felony Assault Second Degree Injures a Law Enforcement Officer.

The Trooper was also transported to Beebe Hospital where he was treated and released for injuries sustained during the altercation. State Police say the 3 year veteran has been placed on administrative leave as per Divisional Policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.
