Police: Aston woman stole $852,000 from employer

ASTON, Pa. - August 15, 2013

Ruth Phillips, 54, of the 700 block of Hill Avenue, surrendered to county detectives on Thursday morning.

The investigation began after the owners Phillips' employer, Pop Tuna Builders, formerly D'Annunzio and Sons, became suspicious over missing money.

Investigators say Phillips, a family friend who was hired as a bookkeeper, allegedly forged nearly 700 checks from 2007 to 2013 worth $852,773.63.

According to a police affadavit, Phillips' employers say she told them she took a little money at first and continued when no one noticed because she "enjoyed the lavish lifestyle."

Phillips disputes that account.

Police say the checks Phillips wrote were to herself along with various utilities and credit card companies.

Phillips was remanded to the Delaware County Prison on $100,000 unsecured bail.
