Intense fire at Jersey City recycling plant

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - August 20, 2013

The blaze broke out late Monday at the Sims Metal Management Company plant and could be seen for miles.

A spokesman for the company says the fire was concentrated in a stockpile in a scrap metal receiving area. Sean Hughes says company crews worked with fire personnel by using cranes to remove material from the stockpile.

A Jersey City fire boat also poured water on the flames.

Fire Department spokesman Bob McHugh says no one was injured and there's been no threat to the surrounding area.

McHugh and Hughes say the cause of the fire is unknown.

A 50-foot pile of metal and plastic burned at the plant for 12 hours in 2010.
