At an unrelated news conference on Tuesday, Mack initially refused to address the police shootings and gun violence gripping the city.
Mack then said "My heart goes out to the two cops who were shot."
Trenton police Detective Edgar Rios, gunned down during a domestic violence call August on 15th, remains in a medically-induced coma while his partner, Detective Jimmy Letts, is recovering at home from gunshot wounds.
Meanwhile, the shooting death of an up-and-coming rapper back on Friday brought the number of people murdered in Trenton this year to 31, tying the city's all-time record.
"I don't know too many communities whose crime rate would go down when you lose 105 police officers. So, I understand what's going on. I totally understand and we are working on it," Mack said.
State police patrols have been ramped up to aid local police who continue to work shorthanded.
Also Tuesday, the AA Trenton Thunder baseball club honored the officers by having ticket agents wear Trenton police caps. Also, proceeds from the 50/50 raffle were going to the officers.
"Every single dollar is going to go to offset the cost of the families incurred after their loved ones were injured in the line of duty," said Trenton Thunder CEO Will Smith.
The detectives were also honored with a painting of them, donated by artist Carol Johnson, which now hangs in the commander's office.
