Police exchange gunfire with armed man in North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - September 7, 2013

It happened early Saturday morning.

The 25th district officers were a part of a Burglary Detail Team.

The suspect, a 16-year-old male, was spotted on Warnock Street with a black shotgun at his side.

When the officers identified themselves as police, the suspect fled and a chase ensued.

Police say the suspect turned at the corner of Germantown Avenue and Cambria Street and fired one time at the officers.

Both officers returned fire but no one was hit.

The chase continued and police called for backup.

The suspect was ordered to stop and after a brief struggle he was apprehended.

Police say they have recovered the suspect's gun, which was tossed during the foot chase.

He was taken into custody and faces a list of charges.

The officer involved in the incident will be placed on desk duty as part of protocol.

Philadelphia Police's Internal Affairs Department will be handling the investigation.
