Newark police are warning residents not to let people claiming to be utility workers into their homes without demanding identification.

Police say there were two incidents over the weekend in which a man claiming to be with the water department tried to enter the homes of elderly residents.

The first incident occurred Saturday afternoon on Phillips Avenue. The second happened Sunday afternoon on Orchard Road.

The suspect in each incident was described as a man wearing on orange construction vest and driving a white truck.

Police said the man drove away from both scenes after the homeowners asked him for identification. Authorities note that city employees are required to carry identification cards and must present them upon request.
