Man, 24, arrested for crashing stolen car into house, injuring 12-year-old

KENSINGTON - October 2, 2013

Darnell Gates, 24, of the 2800 block of Jasper Street, is charged with theft and related offenses.

The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 2000 block of East Somerset Street.

Police say Gates stole a green 2003 Ford Taurus from the 2800 block of Jasper Street, then lost control of the vehicle a few blocks away at Amber and East Somerset Streets, striking a stop sign and parked cars.

The stolen car then crossed the street and crashed into the side of the house, hitting a 12-year-old girl who was inside working on her computer.

The girl suffered injuries to her abdomen. She was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in serious condition.

Relatives identified the girl as Jaline Hererra, a 7th grader at Memphis Academy.

A 17-year-old passenger in the stolen car was also taken to St. Christopher's with leg and foot injuries. He was listed in serious condition.

The Red Cross says five people in the house were displaced.
