Go easy on black licorice, says FDA

WASHINGTON, D.C.

So the Food & Drug Administration is reminding adults about one particular candy - black licorice.

Real black licorice contains a compound that can lower your potassium levels.

That can cause abnormal heart rhythms,,, a rise in blood pressure, or a lethargic feeling.

Incidents have been rare, and you must eat the equivalent of 2 ounces a day for 2 weeks, but it has happened - especially in people over 40, or with a history of heart disease.
