The super power of hand washing

CAMDEN, N.J. - October 31, 2013

There's Batman and Spider Man, but if you visit Lourdes Medical Centers in Camden or Willingboro, you'll meet another superhero - the Sanitizer.

The Sanitizer fights bad guys you can't see - germs and viruses we all carry around on our hands. Getting rid of them could save some of the 90,000 people a year who die from infections acquired in the hospital.

Lourdes officials decided to ask employees what slogan might motivate them to keep their hands clean.

After receiving over 150 slogans from both facilities, the idea from Dr. Joseph Ombalsky of Camden "Bam, Pow, Zap out Infections" barely edged out the "Clean hands across Lourdes" team from Willingboro.

Posters, t-shirts, and other items around the hospital reinforce the message, as do education classes. And it's not just for workers in direct contact with patients.

Mary Fornek, Lourdes' Patient Safety Officer, explains, "Everyone needs to be a super-sanitizer. That includes all of our outpatient centers, all our MRI facilities, everything that's under the Lourdes Health System.

And everyone is reminded daily about the importance of good hand washing by the life-sized superhero cutout in the hospital lobbies.
