Pictures of brother, sister in Elsmere hit-and-run

ELSMERE, Del. - November 6, 2013

Police say 18-year-old Jesus Martinez died from his injuries Tuesday night.

His sister 19-year-old Sheila Martinez faces multiple charges including manslaughter.

Paramedics and firefighters spent nearly 20 minutes trying to dislodge Jesus' body from underneath the minivan. Jesus sustained injuries to his head, pelvis, abdomen and extremities. He was transported to Christiana Hospital where he later died.

.

"It was horrific," said Chief Laura Giles. "I was on scene. If it was 20 minutes, it was 20 minutes too long."

According to authorities, the brother and sister were both in the car and had a fight prior to the incident.

Authorities tell Action News that it was around 1:00 p.m. when Shelia was driving along Bungalow towards Kirkwood Avenue and struck Jesus, who was in the crosswalk, just within a couple of blocks of their home.

With her brother's body trapped underneath the vehicle, the sister then allegedly did a U-turn and dragged her brother approximately 100 feet before bringing the van to a stop.

Sheila then jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

In her statement to police Sheila Martinez says she had just had an argument with Jesus inside the van. She says he got out, and fearing he was going to attack her, she made a U-turn, lost sight of him, then realized she'd hit him.

Sheila then ran home, but did not call 9-1-1, nor did she attempt to report the accident.

Margarita Lopez heard Sheila Martinez screaming as she fled the van and her brother on foot.

"I just heard some screaming, and I just look out the window, and I saw this girl in shock talking on the phone. I come outside, and then I saw this girl saying, 'Oh my God, Angela, I just run over some guy.' That's what I heard," said Lopez

.

Police say Sheila Martinez ran home and took her mom's car and drove to McDonalds where she was apprehended.

"Right now it's just been sibling rivalry that was apparently just a fight that just escalated," said Chief Giles.

Martinez has been released from custody. She was being held on $25,000 unsecured bail.
