Delaware gets nearly 1 foot of snow in places

DOVER, Del. (AP) - December 8, 2013

The National Weather Service is reporting an unofficial snow total of 11 inches in Newark. The weather service says snowfall was measured at 8 inches in Wilmington and North Wilmington, while New Castle, Glasgow and Hockessin got 6 inches.

The Wilmington Police Department says the snowfall and the rapid accumulation has made most roadways in that area impassable. Police are urging people to stay off the roadways and avoid non-emergency travel.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge has reopened after being closed following an accident involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer.

The Delaware Department of Transportation is also advising drivers to stay off the roads to allow its 200 snowplow crews to work.

Authorities warn that condition could worsen with the possibility of freezing rain and icy roads.
