Ice jam causes big headaches in Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. - January 8, 2014

The jam is being blamed for flooding in the lower level of the Capitol complex parking garage behind the state house.

Meanwhile, frozen floodwaters also created a sheet of ice on two downtown exit ramps along Route 29.

There was a crash around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Market Street exit where a taxi cab was rear ended by another vehicle after it lost control on the flooded ice patch.

Both the Memorial Drive exit and Market Street exit along Route 29 were then shut down because of the ice condition, creating a traffic backup for commuters coming into Trenton.

Trenton firefighters continue to pump water out of the Capitol complex garage, and city official are monitoring the ice flow closely as the ice has risen close to the top of retention walls along the river embankment.

The concern is if the ice continues to pile up and goes higher there's a potential for spill over onto the highway.
