Recession - bad for economy, good for eating habits

WASHINGTON, D.C.; January 16, 2014

The Agriculture Department says adults cut almost a hundred calories a day from their diets between 2005 and 2010.

It's largely because they ate out less, even from fast food restaurants.

Restaurant meals cost about three times as much as meals made at home.

The survey shows Americans consuming slightly less saturated animal fat and a little more fiber. In addition, family say they have been eating more meals together, and more of those meals are home-cooked.

There was also improvement in what people ate at home.

Recently, the government said obesity has leveled off, although the number of severely obese is still rising.
