The Art of Aging: Meals on Wheels

PHILADELPHIA - January 16, 2014

"Meals on Wheels" is possibly the best known of the programs funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and certainly one of the most important.

"We distribute meals to qualifying seniors in Philadelphia that are unable to prepare meals for themselves at home," said Susan Gibson, nutrition manager for the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA).

But this program is not just about the food.

"These meals are very important because they rely on them for their nourishment and they really enjoy them also," said PCA driver Edwin Feliciano.

"The human contact is wonderful," he continued. "It's like they couldn't wait for me to come the next week when I see them. They love it. They love it."

"The meals are very good, really nutritious, and they're very good," Meals on Wheels recipient Marcia Dixon told Action News. "I get the kosher meals because I have a heart problem. So it's a great big help for me to have these meals. The PCA has been a Godsend."
