Crash causes gas leak in Northeast Philadelphia

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - February 1, 2014

It was around 2:00 a.m. Saturday when a man in his 60s traveling east on Comly Road, crossed over Academy Road and lost control of his vehicle, striking a parked car, which then slammed into a parked pickup truck before ending up on the sidewalk and shearing off the vent for a 6 inch natural gas pipeline.

Responding firefighters were forced to spray water on the ruptured vent while waiting for PGW crews to arrive and shut off the gas.

Additional firefighters were called along with police and evacuated 14 total residents from homes in the 11000 block of Academy Road and in the 3200 block of Rhett Road.

Residents were brought over to a nearby firehouse until they could return home.

PGW crews arrived within the hour and were soon able to shut off the gas line.

Residents were able to return to their homes about two hours later.

Two people involved in the crash were transported to Aria Torresdale Hospital with minor injuries.
