Del. man charged with 4th DUI after sideswiping police car

HARRINGTON, Del. - February 24, 2014

The accident happened at 1:35 a.m. Sunday on Railroad Avenue, north of the Commerce Street intersection.

According to police, an officer from Harrington Police Department was parked on the southbound side of the road when a vehicle, operated by 47-year-old Thomas J. Lepera, sideswiped the left side of the fully marked patrol car.

Lepera's 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe allegedly continued southbound, turning onto Commerce Street where it came to a stop after the officer caught up, activated the lights on the patrol car, and pulled the Hyundai over.

Harrington Police requested State Police to help investigate, and upon their arrival Troopers say Lepera, the lone occupant of the vehicle, had an odor of alcohol.

A DUI investigation ensued and Lepera was subsequently taken into custody.

An inquiry into Lepera's driving record revealed three previous DUI convictions – Sunday's arrest being the fourth.

Lepera was charged, arraigned and then incarcerated on default of $4,025 secured bond.
