Police say slick roads led to a deadly head-on collision on southbound Route 1 in Smyrna, Delaware Tuesday morning.

The accident happened at 10:48 a.m. in the area of Black Diamond Road.

According to police, 78-year-old Brigitte Best was travelling north on Route 1 when she lost control of her 2008 Nissan Altima in the snow. The car veered across the grass median and into the southbound lanes, colliding with a 2002 Ford Express van.

Best was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both occupants of the van were transported to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Route 1 southbound was closed for three hours but has since reopened.
