Arrest in burglary, arson at Philadelphia councilwoman's home

PHILADELPHIA - March 29, 2014

23-year-old Edwin Diana of the 2100 block of Palethorpe Street in Philadelphia is charged with burglary, arson and related offenses.

Investigators say Diana broke into a house owned by Philadelphia City Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez sometime before 5:30 a.m. Friday.

They say he stole jewelry and electronics then set two fires and fled.

Firefighters arrived a short time later in the 2100 block of North Hancock Street to find fire on the second floor of the 3-story row house. They had the blaze under control within 15 minutes. No one was injured.

Quinones-Sanchez was not in the home at the time of the incident.

Police said they were able to track Diana down through some jewelry stolen from the house which he allegedly pawned later on Friday.

Investigators obtained a warrant Saturday morning to search Diana's home.

They found more of the stolen items and arrested him.
