Beth Allen of DIY HipChicks says now that Spring has sprung, it's time for some easy, inexpensive maintenance outside your home.
Steps you can take now to save you big bucks right through the Spring and Summer. Like cleaning out you air conditioner, so it runs efficiently.
"You can unscrew this grill on the top, remove that, take a shot-vac and remove all the leaves and debris that are down there, that can block ventilation and flow," said Allen.
Next, you'll want to check your roof but only if you can access it safely.
"Get on the lower roof line and just inspect low shingles or anything that could be going wrong. The next thing is to inspect the gutters," said Allen.
You can replace loose gutter spikes yourself. And cleaning out leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts will keep water away from you home's foundation, which helps prevent flood damage.
You might want also want to install and inexpensive, expandable downspout extender, which also moves water away.
Finally, inspect your trees and shrubs for damage and consider new plantings that could help cut your cooling bills.
"You want to plant in the sunlight exposure so that they'll shield your house from the sun and it will give you better energy efficiency," said Allen.
