U.S. losing ground on mothers' health

NEW YORK, N.Y.; May 7, 2014

Several new reports say that when it comes to delivering babies, the United States is heading in the wrong direction.

5 years ago, the U-S was the 4th best place in the world to have a baby, but now it's number 31.

More than twice as many women die in childbirth here, compared to Canada.

The biggest increase is in the 20 to 24 age range.

Experts say a lack of access to prenatal care, plus high rates of obesity, diabetes, and other conditions may be to blame.

The Affordable Care Act may change some of that by mandating insurance coverage for health screenings, and maternity and newborn care.
