NEW YORK, N.Y. (WPVI) -- Autism experts are working to counter the latest statement of a medical myth.
At last night's Republican presidential debate, one candidate stated vaccines are linked to autism.
Doctors, and even the organization Autism Speaks, said Thursday they want to make it clear - vaccines do not cause autism.
And delaying any vaccines can leave children vulnerable to dangerous diseases.
Senator Rand Paul, who is an ophthalmologist, said vaccines are one of the greatest discoveries of all time.
Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, also said vaccines are safe and important.
Autism Speaks said candidates should be talking about better funding for treatments and support services, not an old myth.
The organization called on elected officials to act on behalf of those affected by autism, building a national plan which addresses the needs of people throughout their lives.
