CAMDEN (WPVI) -- A billion-dollar complex of office space, apartments, stores and hotel offering dramatic views of the Delaware River and the Philadelphia skyline is set to change the future of Camden.

Liberty Property Trust, a major developer, has announced plans to build the project they say will transform the Camden waterfront.

"Once again, Camden is a place of beginnings, excitement. It is poised once again to take a starring role as a piece of this metropolitan area," Bill Hankowsky, CEO of Liberty Property Trust, said.

Governor Chris Christie took a break from his presidential campaign travels to be there for the announcement and said the project is proof Camden is turning around.

"Camden is no longer America's most dangerous city. Camden is a city where families come to live and work and do business," Christie said.

A number of South Jersey businesses have committed to or are considering investing in the project including insurance executive George Norcross, a major driver behind the waterfront development.

The project is being designed by noted architect Robert A.M. Stern.

Mayor Dana Redd told the packed house at Adventure Aquarium, the waterfront project will attract other business and be a game changer for Camden.

"We understand that when businesses commit to Camden, the promise of jobs are soon to follow - both construction and permanent jobs for Camden city residents," Redd said.
