NEW YORK, N.Y. (WPVI) -- Some drug companies are facing harsh criticism over sky-rocketing mark-ups on some older medications.
And one drug in particular is fueling the outrage.
Daraprim has been on the market for decades, to treat a life-threatening parasitic infection - toxoplasmosis.
The cost of one tablet went from $13.50 to $750 dollars!
The drug was acquired by a new company in August, but experts say there's nothing different about the drug that would cause such a spike in price.
The owner says the drug is rare and the extra money will go towards finding a better treatment.
But this isn't an isolated case.
Other medications which have long been on the market have also seen a significant increase in cost.
Critics say it is a business ploy to take an older, less-common drug and present it as a high-priced 'specialty drug.'
