Delaware Co. communities sending 20,000 lbs of donations to Bahamas 

CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- Communities across Delaware County have given more than 20,000 pounds of donations that will soon be shipped to the Bahamas to aid in Hurricane Dorian relief.

A large caravan of officers escorted two trucks filled with supplies to the Gerace Shipping Warehouse on Tuesday morning.

"It's heartbreaking. People's homes are in rubble, their friends, family members are deceased. We can't imagine it, so if there's even a little bit that we can do to help out, we're more than happy to," said Delaware County District Attorney Kat Copeland.

Copeland teamed up with the Delaware County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 27 to help.

Officers originally planned to drive the donations for relief in southern states but plans changed when the storm turned, so now the supplies with go to the Bahamas.

"These residents of Delaware County have really stepped up and the response was overwhelming. It really was," said Delco FOP Lodge 27 VP Chris Eiserman.

Local shipping companies Mike Gerace Inc. and John Steer Company are shipping the supplies to the Bahamas at no charge.

They will coordinate a drop off time over the next few weeks when ports to the islands are functional again.

Supplies collected include water, first-aid, ready-to-eat food and toiletries items.

Officials with charities like the The American Red Cross are also requesting a need for monetary donations to help with relief efforts as well.
