KENSINGTON (WPVI) -- A security guard shot and wounded a robbery suspect in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

It happened at the Family Dollar store along the 3100 block of Frankford Avenue around 10 p.m. Monday.

Investigators say employees confronted a 31-year-old man for stealing items. They say he pulled out a knife and then took off with the drawer from the cash register.

A security guard confronted him outside, and that's when police say the man lunged at the guard with the knife.

The security guard fired a shot, hitting the man in the leg.

Arriving officers had to use their Tasers and pepper spray to finally subdue him.

"He appeared that he was under the influence of some sort of narcotics which caused him to behave this way," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The robbery suspect is hospitalized in stable condition.
