Christmas Day is a special time for many families around the Delaware Valley.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Christmas Day is a special time for many families around the Delaware Valley.

Action News went to the Smith family home in Northeast Philadelphia where Christmas morning is a time that's looked forward to all year long.

It's the day 8-year-old Lexie, 7-year-old Michael, 5-year-old Kayla and even 6-month-old Jake have been waiting for all year.

Opening presents is top a priority for the kids.

Mom and Dad see the bigger picture and say Christmas goes beyond the perfectly wrapped gifts and glimmering trees.

They remind the children it's not just about receiving, but giving, sharing and bonding with family.

"It's just great to do this for the kids and see the smiles on their faces. Hopefully, they'll have memories that'll last a lifetime," Megan Smith said.

Megan and her husband Michael, a Philadelphia police officer in the 15th district, allowed Action News to capture the special and magical time for their family.

They know some are not as fortunate and say they don't take this day and this moment for granted.

"I'm just appreciative and thankful that the Lord blessed us with four great children and we try to share as much as we can," Michael said.

A great holiday message from parents to the kids on a very special day for the Smith family and families all around the area.
