Flu shot can also protect against bacterial pneumonia
Flu shot can also protect against bacterial pneumonia: Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5pm on November 7, 2017.

A flu shot not only protects you against the flu, it also helps prevent bacterial pneumonia.

The infection can develop after someone has suffered a case of the flu.

Typically, people think they're getting better, then suddenly they come down with a high fever, productive cough and shortness of breath.

Bacterial pneumonia is especially dangerous for the very young, very old and people with chronic conditions.

But it can hit everyone hard.

"It's important to know that even very healthy people can become ill and even die of bacterial pneumonia after they had the flu," says Dr. Susan Rehm, an infectious disease specialist at the Cleveland Clinic.

It's important to see your healthcare provider if you have symptoms of pneumonia.

There are also additional vaccines to help protect young kids, and adults over the age of 65.

Haven't gotten vaccinated? Here's where to find one.
