A California bakery has built a reputation for its carefully crafted cakes. However, one special request for a Ken doll birthday cake with a twist came with a slice of controversy.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (WPVI) -- Freeport Bakery in Sacramento, California has built a reputation for its carefully crafted cakes. However, one special request for a Ken doll birthday cake with a twist came with a slice of controversy.

A customer ordered a cake featuring Ken wearing a dress, sash and even a tiara. It took the bakery about 40 minutes to put all the details on the buttermilk cake and bakery co-owner Marlene Goetzeler, was proud of their work.

She posted an image of the cake on the Freeport Bakery Facebook page and the sweet surprise nearly turned sour when some people began to comment on the post.

"(Initially) more supporters than ever, but we did receive some negative (comments)," said Goetzeler.

Some people took the creative cake and added another layer to the conversation by turning it into a LGBT debate Facebook.

One man claimed the cake "ruined Barbie" and another person wrote they would no longer patronize the bakery. However, others claimed the bakery was "standing up to gender negativity" and called the cake, "beautiful."

"First, I was shocked, then I was surprised and then I was like, 'Well, you can't make everyone happy.' I deleted a lot of the negative comments because I didn't want the Facebook page to be a big drama," said Goetzeler.

Goetzeler said the bakery continues to receive feedback from all over the country, but the majority of the posts have been positive and the customer loved the cake!
