9-year-old boy battling cancer gets parade outside hospital window
Danny Feltwell is a 9-year-old boy from Delaware who is currently battling his second bout with a rare and very aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The community is now rallying to lift his spirits.
Today, a parade made its way past his hospital window. It was a show of love from our men and women who serve and protect in more ways than one.
"Danny was very excited, it was a blessing. He watched everybody drive by and he was waving. He even got to talk to the captain on the radio," said his father, Dan Feltwell.
Danny watched from his window at A.I. duPont Hospital.
Danny cannot get many visitors inside, but outside is a different story. First responders from across Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania formed a sea of support outside of Danny's hospital window.
"I am amazed I am looking around at all of the cars and agencies that came and we put this together on short notice. I am so impressed that everyone has taken the time out of their day to make Danny smile," said Officer Jason Pires of the University of Delaware Police.
University of Delaware detective Bill Wentz was with him there behind the glass with Danny this morning.
Talking about Corporal Wentz, Danny's father said, "He has brought more joy to my son today than you can ever imagine."
Corporal Wentz started a social media campaign to send cheer to Danny, and hundreds of letters have already arrived.
"One day at a time we will keep him happy the letters have made him very happy - so thank you," said Dan Feltwell.
Today, with this parade, his father says the support is making every difference.
Danny has another surgery scheduled for next week.
"He is a little beat up, counts are low, and he's tired, but he's doing well. But we were blessed with a miracle. In 10 days the doctors here were able to dissipate my son's tumor. His tumor is gone," said Feltwell.
However, Feltwell says the cancer is still there. They are currently searching for a donor for a bone marrow transplant.
