FDA proposes to push back deadline to change nutrition labels
FDA proposes to push back deadline to change nutrition labels: Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5pm on September 29, 2017.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Food and Drug Administration is proposing pushing back the deadline for food manufacturers to change nutrition labels.

Plans to change labels were finalized last year. The revised labels will make calorie counts more prominent and they'll also include the amount of added sugar.

The goal is to help curb obesity.

The deadline is supposed to be July 2018 for large companies.

Now it's proposed to push that back to 2020 for large companies and 2021 for smaller manufacturers.

The agency says it gives food-makers more time to comply.

Critics, including the American Heart Association, say the delay puts people's health at risk. The public will have 30 days to comment on the new deadline.
