Infection known as C-Diff on the rise in recurring cases
Infection known as C-Diff on the rise in recurring cases. Registered Nurse Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on July 3, 2017.

Doctors at Penn say an infection known as C. Difficile or C-Diff, has a recurring rate that has jumped 200% over a ten year period.

The doctors don't know why we're seeing a spike, but they say it costs the healthcare system billions of dollars and patients struggle to find a treatment that works.

One procedure - a bacteria transplant has shown success. It transplants bacteria from a donor with a healthy gut.

Experts say we need more research on the long-term effects of this treatment.

A nationwide registry has been set up to collect data.
