The extremely cold weather is a perfect recipe for chapped lips - we've got tips on how to prevent them.

Skin-care experts say that if you want to moisten dry lips, don't lick them!

"Saliva, once you put it on the lips, dries out and makes our lips even more dry. Plus the enzymes that are in saliva, that are meant to digest food, are actually irritating to the lips," said Dr. Melissa Piliang, dermatologist.

Instead, use an ointment-based lip balm to lock in moisture and help heal cracks or splits.

Petrolatum or glycerin are good ingredients.

However stay away from lip balms with camphor, menthol, or eucalyptus - they can dry out your lips, making the problem worse.

Also avoid the temptation to remove any flaky, peeling skin - as that creates cracks and sores, making the situation worse.
