Tracking flu activity in the Philadelphia area
Tracking flu activity in the Philadelphia area: Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5pm on November 10, 2017.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Government health officials are tracking the flu. Activity is still low but it is starting to increase.

One toddler in California has died due to complications from the virus.

And it's a very sad reminder that the flu can be severe and deadly.

On the CDC map, activity is picking up in some states in the west, in the south and in Massachusetts.

In our area, it's just sporadic cases, but activity is picking up.

We can't predict how the season will play out, but we do know it could be a severe flu season that peaks earlier than usual.

The best defense is a flu shot. It's recommended for everyone older than 6-months-old.

If you have an infant younger than that, make sure that people around the baby are vaccinated. Handwashing is also an additional way to prevent getting sick
