Nicotine patches being tested to treat lung damage

Nicotine patches may have a valuable use beyond helping people stop smoking.

They're being tested at Ohio State University to treat sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease which can cause severe lung damage.

It also drains sufferers of their energy.

"We're hoping that people will actually get a secondary benefit, not only that their lung disease will get better, but they'll also feel more energized and be able to get up and go," said Dr. Crouser.

Patients will wear the nicotine patches for 6 months, to see how it affects them.

Results from a small study were promising, so the tests are being expanded.
