A tanker truck and a school bus crashed in Gloucester County, New Jersey Monday afternoon leaving a number of students injured.

It happened just before 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ferrell and Monroeville roads in South Harrison Township.

Police said a Holcomb school bus carrying 22 students from the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT) was traveling west on Ferrel and had stopped at the stop sign.

"The Holcomb school bus after stopping attempted to make a left-hand turn and collided with the tanker truck that was headed west on Monroeville," said South Harrison Township Police Lt. Sean Weston.

Police said the bus driver either did not see the tanker truck or did not know it had the right of way.

According to investigators, the driver of the tanker slammed into the rear left section of the bus before crashing into a number of trees and then landing on its side. The tanker driver was critically injured and taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center.

Fourteen students were also injured and were transported to five area hospitals.

"My understanding is their injuries are anywhere from leg injuries to facial lacerations to some of the kids on the bus," said Weston.

Gloucester County Haz-Mat Assessment Unit was at the scene as the impact caused the tanker truck to overturn and leak diesel fuel onto the roadway.

The Superintendent of the Kingsway Regional School District has not yet issued a statement regarding the accident.

New Jersey State Police and the National Transportation and Safety Board are also investigating the accident.
