CAMDEN (WPVI) -- A man was shot while exchanging gunfire with police in Camden, New Jersey, the prosecutor's office says.

It happened around 3:40 a.m. Sunday on Chestnut and Louis streets.

Officer responded to a report of shots fired. Once on the scene, they spoke to a witness who told them which way the shooter fled.

The officers continued on Louis Street and then onto Sycamore Street where they encountered the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Shlawrence Unique Ross.

Officials say that's when Ross and officers exchanged gunfire.

Ross was shot once in the arm. He is in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital.

The officers were not injured and have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office says the officers' identities will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
