GLOUCESTER TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police say the pedestrian who was killed on Route 42 in Gloucester Township Friday afternoon was running from security personnel at a nearby shopping complex when he was struck.

It happened before 3 p.m. Friday.

According to police, 25-year-old Donte Bryson, of Sicklerville, ran onto Route 42's southbound lanes and was struck by a black Chevy Blazer travelling north.

He was later pronounced dead.

Police say their preliminary investigation revealed that Bryson was attempting to flee Gloucester Premium Outlets after being suspected of shoplifting by security personnel.

The driver of the Chevy Blazer did stop after the incident and is cooperating with police.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
